Seventh Generation (Continued)
Seventh Generation (Continued)
Family of Joshua Kilburn S. BASFORD (260) & Margaret LITTLE
620. Phoebe Jane BASFORD (Joshua Kilburn S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 22 Feb 1831 in McHenry Co., IL. [1624] Phoebe Jane died in Decatur Co., IA, on 7 Apr 1902. [1624] Buried in Shy Cemetery, Decatur Co., IA. [1625] aka: Jane, June, Pheba J., Fela Jane, Feby. [553], [552], [805], [807], [1626]

It is not proven that she is the daughter of Joshua K. S. Basford and Margaret little, but it seems likely. At the time of the 1850 census, Samuel and Catharine Bassford were living with Jane and her husband in the same county as Joshua and his brother Benjamin. [553], [1019] Also, a daughter of the right age is listed with Joshua in the 1840 census. [556]

She is probably the Phoebe/Pheba/Fela Jane Basford who married Henry M. Little and lived in Decatur Co., IA. [1626] This is consistent with the fact that the obituary for her half sister Margaret (Basford) Smith lists a sister Mrs. Henry Little of Decatur City, IA. [1015] The obituary of Phoebe Little indicates that she was born in McHenry Co, IL, and that her mother died when she was very small and she moved with her father to Marengo, IL, where she grew to womanhood. [1624]

621. Samuel BASFORD (Joshua Kilburn S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1833-1834 in Illinois. [553], [1019], [805], [1069] age 17 in 1850 census, age 23 in 1856 census, age 26 in 1860 census, age 37 in 1870 census. Samuel died prob. bet 1870 and 1872. [805], [1627] 1870 census, and orphaned son traveled to Washington state.

It is not proven that he is the son of Joshua K. S. Basford. At the time of the 1850 and 1860 census, he was living in the same county as Joshua and his brother Benjamin. [553], [1019] Also, a son of the right age is listed with Joshua in the 1840 census. [1017]

In 1868, Samuel Bassford is farming about 130 acres of land in Section 5, Pleasant Valley Twp., Fayette Co., IA (2 miles WSW of Clermont). [1630]

1870 federal census for Westfield, Fayette Co., IA, p. 166 [805]
Samuel Basford, male, age 37, b. NY, pauper
(He was living in the poor house. His daughter Stella is also living there, but I don’t know where the rest of the family would be.)

He probably died soon after 1870. A biographical sketch of his son Charles indicated that he had been orphaned at a young age and traveled to Washington state in 1872 with the Armstrong family. [805]

There are twins Frank and Fred Basford (b. abt 1865, IA, father b. IL) listed with the family of Edward Thompson in the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Pleasant Valley Twp., Fayette Co., IA. It seems likely that they are children of Samuel. [805], [806] Fred’s marriage record gives the name of his father as “unknown”, but it gives tha name of his mother as Mary Wood, so this would seem to confirm this hypothesis. [1631]

[553], [1019], [805], [1384], [1632], [1628], [1069], [1629], [1633], [1634], [1635], [1636]

He married Mary Agnes WOOD, daughter of Francis WOOD (~1810-1871) & Helen (WOOD) (~1815->1880), by abt 1851. birth of William. Born abt 1833-1834 in New York. [1019] age 23 in 1856 census, age 26 in 1860 census. Mary Agnes died in Fayette Co., IA, prob. 10 Aug 1868. [1630] prob. Mary A. Wood buried with parents. Buried in God’s Acres Cemetery, Clermont, IA. [1630]

She is probably the Mary wood listed in the 1850 federal census for Coral, McHenry Co., IL, p. 411 [553]
Francis Wood, male, age 40, b. Scotland, mason
Helen, female, age 39, b. NY
Mary, female, age 18, b. NY
John, age 11, b. OH
Francis, age 7, b. NY

She is probably the Mary A. Wood, d. 10 Aug 1868, age 30, buried in the God’s Acres Cemetery, Clermont, IA. [1630] Her gravestone probably lists her maiden name.

[1019], [1384], [1632], [1631], [1633], [1634], [1636]

They had the following children:
1013i.

1017v.

622. Catharine BASFORD (Joshua Kilburn S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1838 in Illinois. [553] age 12 in 1850 census. Catharine died ? .

It is not proven that she is the daughter of Joshua K. S. Basford. At the time of the 1850 census, she was living with a presumed brother Samuel in the household of WIlliam and Jane Bigg, in the same county as Joshua and his brother Benjamin. [553] Jane Bigg is probably another sister.

She may be the Catherine Bashford, age 20, b. IL, living as a servant in the home of Richarrd Lightfoot in the 1860 census of Burritt, Winnebago Co., IL. [1018]

[553]

623. Ann (?) BASFORD (Joshua Kilburn S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1840 in Illinois. [1631] age 10 in 1850 census. Ann (?) died ? .

It is only a guess that she is the daughter of Joshua K. S. Basford. At the time of the 1850 census, she was living in the household of Valerie and Susanna WIlliams, in the same county as Joshua and his brother Benjamin. [553] Perhaps her mother died in child birth since Joshua remarried around the time that Ann was born.
