[143], [144] signed deed, and probate records. Death Cause: wounds suffered during the invasion of Canada. [2] Occupation: Yeoman, Husbandman, Innholder. [145], [146], [147]

There is no record of his birth in the town records, but his parents deposed that “there being no record of their eldest son Jacob Basford's age, testifieth that to the best of their knowledge he was 21 years old the 6th of April 1736.” [119] This deposition was made in order to give Dr. Edmund Toppan a good title to the Hampton farm that Jacob and James Basford had conveyed to the Dr. Toppan in 1730. It was necessary that Jacob Basford, the grandson, who had a remainder interest, should convey his right to Toppan when he came of age. [3] This he did on 16 Oct 1736, his parents, James and Mary Basford, swearing to his age on that same date. [148]

On 18 Aug 1735, Jacob Basford of Chester, yeoman, sold 20 acres of land to Deacon Ebenezer Dearborn of Chester. [145] On 3 Oct 1735, Jacob bought 50 acres in Chester from his father Jacob Basford for £300. [86] On 12 Jan 1736/7, Jacob sold 46 acres of land in Chester to Moses Hills for £220. Will dated 23 Feb 1791, proved 19 Sep 1791, mentions sons John Basford, Ebenezer Basford and Jacob Basford. It also mentions Betsy Basford, Abigail Basford, Sarah Basford, Mary Basford, Andrew Basford, and “my well beloved son John Griffin” who was named Executor. [169] Mary Basford might be her daughter, although she was not identified as such. I believe that her daughters Sarah and Abigail were deceased before 1791, so it is not clear who the women by those names would be. Perhaps Betsy, Abigail, and Mary could be grandchildren or nieces or daughter-in-laws? Likewsie Andrew Basford might be a grandson or a nephew? It is also not clear who John Griffin would be. Perhaps he was a son-in-law?

[165], [167], [126], [2], [13], [168], [121], [144], [120], [142], [23], [169]

They had the following children:
24i.
Sarah (Died as Child) (<1739-<1760)
25ii.
John (1741-~1799)

27iv.
Abigail (Never Married) (1748-<1770)

James (Died as Child) (1754-<1760)
30vii.
Mary (1758-?)

Married by Rev. Bacheler of Haverhill, MA. [167]

New Hampshire vital records gives marriage as 11 Apr 1734, Chester, NH. [167], [142]

One set of notes from Marjorie Spille gives marriage as 3 Apr 1734, Haverhill, MA. [2]
10. James BASFORD (James2, Jacob1). Born bef 29 Nov 1721 in Durham, NH. [138] James was baptized in Durham, NH, on 29 Nov 1721. [138] James died ? .

I assume that the James Bafford, son of James, who was baptized on 29 Nov 1721 at Durham, NH [138] would be the son of James and Mary (Davis) Basford.

On 25 May 1749 in Weston, MA, James Basford of Chester married Deliverance Flagg of Weston, MA. [170] I assume this would be the same James who was baptized in 1721, although his wife would have been almost 20 years older than he was.

[171], [172], [138], [120]

He married Deliverance FLAGG, daughter of Allen FLAGG (?-1711) & Sarah BALL (?-?), on 18 Oct 1749 in Weston, MA. [170] Born on 13 May 1702 in Watertown, MA. [171] Deliverance died ? . intentions recorded on 23 Sep 1749 at Weston, MA. [173]

Bond indicates that the Deliverance Flagg who married James Basford was the daughter of Allen and Sarah (Ball) Flagg born 13 May 1702. [171] However, this would make her much older than James so I wonder if this would be correct?

[171], [172]

The land “fell to our mother, Mary Basford, of Chester aforesaid, deceased, which would have fallen to her out of her father Joseph’s estate.” [121]

An anecdote is told of him that while residing at the Long Meadows, someone told him that his mother had fallen into the well. He replied that he would “light his pipe and hasten!” [165]

[165] mistakenly identifies him as “probably” a son of Jacob, rather than his grandson.
