Fifth Generation (Continued)
Fifth Generation (Continued)
Family of Benjamin BASFORD (34) & Lydia (BASFORD)
75. Jonathan BASFORD (Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 10 May 1780. [526] 65 years 4 months 13 days at death. Jonathan died in Edgar Co., IL, on 23 Sep 1845. [527], [526], [293] Buried in Houston Cemetery, Brouilletts Creek Twp., IL. [526], [293] row 5, stone 6.

He is named in the will of his father Benjamin Basford. [314]

Jonathan Basford of Georgia, VT bought 40 acres of land in Milton, VT from Jesse Blake on 20 Oct 1804 for $149.50. [528] On 23 Dec 1807, Marshal Smith quitclaimed all right he had to this land to Jonathan for $1.50. [529] Jonathan bought 50 acres of land in Milton, VT from Daniel Smith on 18 May 1807 for $179. [530] He sold the land that he had purchased from Jesse Blake to his Samuel Campbell of South Hero, VT on 10 Apr 1810 for $300, [531] and he sold the land that he had purchased from Daniel Smith to his brother David on 11 May 1812 for $700. [532] He apparently did not ever move to the property in Milton since he was still listed as residing in Georgia, VT on all of these deeds.

On 21 Jan 1808 he sold 15 acres of land in Georgia, VT to Nathan Stevens (who is believed to be his brother-in-law) for $200. [533] On 14 Mar 1810, Jonathan apparently deeded this same land to Nathan Stevens again. [534]

On 5 Jul 1808 Nathan and Dolly Stephens sold any right that they had in the estate of Benjamin Basford to Jonathan Basford of Georgia, VT for $100. [306] Presumably, Dolly must have been an heir of Benjamin, and most likely Jonathan’s sister.

1810 federal census for Georgia, Franklin Co., VT, p. 293 [310]
Jonathan Basford
1 male under 10 (prob. Joshua)
1 male 16-25 (possibly a brother or a boarder?)

1 female 26-44 (Phoebe)

He bought 5 acres of land in Georgia, VT from his brother David Basford in Feb 1812 for $500, [535] and he bought land in Georgia, VT from his father Benjamin on 20 Jul 1812 for $150. [311]

He is probably the John Basford of Georgia, VT who sold land in Milton, VT Highly Minkles on 25 Jan 1815. [536]

1820 federal census of Vigo Co., IN , p. 186 [19]
Jonathan Barford

1 female 10 to 15 (Phoebe)

They removed to Brouillet Twp., Edgar Co., IL in 1826. [537]

He bought land in Illinois in 1826, 1830 and 1831. [538]

1830 federal census for Edgar Co., IL, p. 25. [539]
Jonathan Basford
1 male 10-15 (Benjamin)
1 male 15-20 (Jonathan S.)
1 male 50-60 (Jonathan)
1 female 5-10 (Lydia)
1 female 15-20 (prob. Levisa)
1 female 40-50 (Phoebe)

Jonathan S. and Pheobe N. Basford sold 80 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to George Harding on 3 Mar 1829 for $300. Witnesses to this deed were Jonathan S. Basford and Joshua K. S. Basford. [540] Jonathan S. is known to be a son, and probably Joshua K. S. Basford is also a son.

On 12 Mar 1831 Jonathan Basford took a mortgage from John Vannert for $118. The mortgage was satisfied on 6 May 1844. [541] Jonathan bought 11-1/2 acres of land in Edgar Co. from Daniel and Catherine Cameraon on 27 Jun 1831 for $15. [542]

John Veness apparently sold land Jonathan Basford in Edgar Co., IL on 3 Dec 1831. (John Veness signed a bond for $1000 to be paid to Jonathan Basford, which bond was to be void if a certain tract of land was transferred to Jonathan Basford after he was to make a payment of $360 to John Veness.) [543]

He sold two parcels of land to Joshua K. S. Basford (probably his son) on 21 Jul 1832 for $83.33. [544] He sold 11-1/2 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to his son Jonathan S. Basford on 13 Aug 1832 for $131.04. [545] He bought 26 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL from J. K. S. Basford on 7 Nov 1835 for $200. [546]

Jonathan and Phebe Basford sold 40 acres of land in Edgar Co., IL to Benjamin S. Basford (probably a son) on 6 Jan 1838 for $100. This deed was witnessed by Henry S. Johnson. [547] (This is presumably the Henry S. Johnson who married Levisa J. Basford, who is believed to be a daughter of Jonathan and Phebe.)

He is probably the Jonathan Basford of Edgar Co., IL who obtained land grants in Palestine, IL on 23 May 1831 and 16 Sep 1831. [548]

He is probably the Jonathan Basford who obtained two land grants in Parke Co., IN on 1 Aug 1839 (certificate #23,191 for 40 acres to Jonathan Basford of Parke Co., IN; and certificate #23,357 for 80 acres to Jonathan Basford of Edgar Co., IL). [548] Jonathan’s son Joshua was living in Parke Co., IN in the 1940 census. Perhaps he was living on this land? In Oct 1840 Jonathan and Phebe sold all 120 acres of land to Henry Johnson (his probable son-in-law, the husband of Levisa). [549]

1840 federal census for Edgar Co., IL, p. 77. [550]
Jonathan Basford
1 male 60-69 (Jonathan)
1 female 15-19 (Lydia)
1 female 50-59 (Phoebe)

He died at the house of Samuel Jones (his son-in-law). [551]

All of the following are likely to be the children of Jonathan and Phebe: [552]
Illinois Marraiges for Edgar Co. Ill. from 1823-1850
Basford, Jonathan S. & Allen , Guly M., 23 Dec 1832
Bassford, Benjamin & Johnson, Abigail , 14 Feb 1837
Johnson, Henry S.& Bassford, Levisa J., 30 Jan 1837
Nobles, Mathew D. & Bassford, Lydia S., 4 Nov. 1843

Assuming that Lydia was indeed his daughter, Jonathan must have lived in Vigo Co., IN in abt 1823 when she was born. [553]

On 8 Aug 1839, a Joshua K.S. Basford married Agnes Newman in Tippecanoe Co., IN. [554] He was probably a son but this has not been proven. (He was involved with several land transactions with Jonathan and Phebe, [544], [546] and was a witness on the deed from Jonahtan and Pheobe to George Harding on 3 Mar 1829. [540])

On 25 Dec 1850, an Ann M. Bassford married Washington Kenney in Vigo Co., IN. [555], [554] Perhaps she was another daughter or grandaughter?

There was a Joseph Bassford (age 40-50) listed in the 1840 census of Prairie Creek Twp., Vigo Co., IN. [556] Perhaps he is another son of Jonathan?

[293] gives birth as 5 May 1780.

He married Phoebe N. (BASFORD) by abt 1806. Born abt 1782 in Massachusetts. [553] age 68 in 1850 census. Phoebe N. died aft 1850. [19] listed in 1850 cenus.

In the 1850 census for Edgar Co., IL she is living with her daughter Lydia (Basford) Noble. [553]

Her maiden name may have been Sanborn. [19], [527]

[19], [553], [540], [545], [544], [547], [527]

They had the following children:
259i.
Phoebe (~1806-1878)
260ii.
Joshua Kilburn S. (~1808->1850)
261iii.
Jonathon Sanborn (1811-1895)
262iv.
Levisa J. (~1810-?)
263v.
Benjamin S. (~1817-1888)
264vi.
Lydia S. (1823-1889)
76. David BASFORD (Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1781 in New Hampshire. [318] age 56 at death. David died in Georgia Plains, VT, on 3 Oct 1837. [318], [295] gravestone. Buried in Georgia Pains Cemetery, Georgia, VT. [318]

The will of Benjamin Basford, dated 4 Jul 18[31?], lists David Basford as his son.. [314]

He bought land in Georgia, VT from his father Benjamin for $500 on 6 May 1805. [308]

David Basford of Georgia, VT bought land in Milton, VT from James Tobias of Middle Hero, VT on 26 Mar 1808 for $70. [561]

1810 census for Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, p. 195. [19]
David Barford
3 males under 10 (possibly Horace and Samuel and Barnwell?)
1 male 10-16
1 male 26-45 (David)
1 female under 10 (prob. Clarissa)
1 female 26-45 (Aurelia)

Amasa Mansfield apparently cosigned a loan for David to purchase some property in Milton, VT because David signed a deed to Amasa on that date that was to become “null and void” provided that David “shall indemnify ... the said Amasa from the payment of a certain note of hand in favor of Heman Allen against the said David Basford, Benjamin Basford and the said Amasa Mansfield, he the said Mansfield having signed said note as security for said David, dated the 11th day of November 1811.” [562] David sold half of this lot to Nathan Stevens (who was probably David’s brother-in-law) on 7 Nov 1810 for $100. [563] He sold the other half of this lot to his brother-in-law Jonathan Blake on 11 Jan 1812, for $60. [564]

He sold 51 acres of land in Georgia, VT to his brother Jonathan for $500 in Feb 1812. [535]

He bought 33 acres of land in Milton, VT from Samuel Hall on 5 Apr 1814 for $116.25. [565]

He sold 50 acres of land in Milton, VT to his brother-in-law Jonathan Blake on 2 Apr 1814 for $500. [566]

He sold 33 acres of land in Milton, VT to Peter Bebee of Georgia, VT on 3 Jul 1815 for $162.50. [567]

1820 federal census for Milton, Chittenden Co., VT [312]
David Basford
2 males under 10 (probably Benjamin and possibly Harmon?)
3 males 10-16 (possibly Samuel and Barnwell and Horace?)
1 male 16-26
1 male 26-45 (David)
2 females under 10 (probably Lydia and ?
1 female 16-26 (Clarissa)
1 female 26-45 (Aurelia)
2 Persons engaged in agriculture

He is listed in the 1830 census of Milton, Chittenden Co., VT, p. 240. [259]

Horace H. Basford of Waterbury, VT (presumably the son of David) took out a mortgage on some land in Waterbury, VT from David Basford of Milton on 26 Mar 1832. Horace was to pay David a promissory note for $150 by the first of September. [568]

His will was dated 18 Sep 1835. At the time he was a resident of Milton, VT. He mentions minor children Sebastian and Mary who were to receive bequests when they reached the ages of 21 and 18, respectively. No mention is made of his other children. Benjamin and Lydia were presumably old enough to have left home. He named his wife “Aurilla” sole administrator of his estate. On 28 Oct 1837, she filed an “Application for Commissioners” indicating that David’s estate was “insolvent and insufficient to pay all the just debts which the deceased owed.” At that time David was referred to as “late of Georgia.” On 7 Nov 1837, Judge WIlliam Bridges appointed Ira Hinkley and Samuel Fairbanks of Georgia Commissioners, and ordered them to return in six months and “make report to the court and return on oath as well a list of all claims by them allowed as a list of such as have been presented and disallowed .“ [569]

In memory of/David Basford/who died Oct 3,/1837/aged 50 years

David and Aurelia are buried right next to Lydia, “consort of Benjamin Basford.” [299] This supports the supposition that Lydia was David’s mother.

There was a Horace H. Basford, formerly of Georgia, VT, who died in Lowell, IL on 14 Nov 1865, age 59. [570] He is probably a son of David Basford. The most compelling evidence of this is given by the fact that Horace took out a mortgage David in 1832. [568]

There was a Barnwell David Bassford admitted to the Franklin Co., VT Bar in 1831. [571] He is also a probable son of David. Other probable children of David include Samuel and Harmon W.

There was a Schuyler Basford who married Filura Blake (b. 1824, the daughter of John and Filura (Campbell) Blake, grandaughter of John and Elizabeth (Basford) Blake). [324] Perhaps he was also a son of David?

He married Aurelia RICHMOND, daughter of Jonathan RICHMOND (1756-?) & Ammarilla CHAMBERS (~1760-1850), bef 1803. birth of Clarissa. Born on 28 Dec 1783 in New Milford, CT. [576] Aurelia died in Georgia Plains, VT, on 27 Nov 1869. [318], [577], [295] age 85 years 11 months 3 days at death. Buried in Georgia Plains Cemetery, Georgia, VT. [318] Death Cause: Pneumonia. Death record gives age as 85 years 11 months 3 days at death which would correspond to a birth date of 24 Dec 1783. It also lists her parents as Oliver and Ammarilla Richmond, and her birthplace as New Milford, CT. [296] Although the father’s name is different, all of the other details seem to match pretty closely with the Aurille Richmond, daughter of Jonathan and Ammarilla (Chambers) Richmond, b. 28 Dec 1783, New Milford, CT, [576] so it would seem quite likely that she must be the same person. Probably Oliver was a middle name. (Jonathan and Ammarilla are known to have a son by that name which would be circumstantial evidence to support this hypothesis. [581])

[572] gave death as 7 Nov 1889.

[299], [582], [314], [324], [583]

She married Jonathan BLAKE (80) , son of John BLAKE (~1759-1842) & 35. Elizabeth BASFORD (1760-1829), bef 1805. [582] birth of Lydia. Born on 1 Aug 1780 in Weare, NH. [324] indicates that Jonathan married a Sally Basford. I am assuming that this is the Sally (Basford) Blake mentioned in the will of Benjamin Basford of Georgia, VT. [314] A John Blake witnessed that will; could this be the father of Jonathan?

He bought land in Milton, VT from his brother-in-law David Basford on 11 Jan 1812 [564] and 2 Apr 1814. [566]

277iv.
Emeline (Died as Child) (~1827-1827)

[322] gives another child George Washington, b. 1823

They might be the parents of J. D. Madison Blake, who died 28 Feb 1827, age 15 years 7 months, and is buried near to their graves in the Miltonboro Cemetery. [584]
78. Dolly (?) BASFORD (Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born prob. abt 1785-1790. [310] age 16-25 in 1810 census. Dolly (?) died ? .

No direct evidence has been found that Benjamin had a daughter Dolly, but on 5 Jul 1808 Nathan and Dolly Stephens sold any right that they had in the estate of Benjamin Basford to Jonathan Basford for $100. [306] Presumably, Dolly must have been an heir of Benjamin, and most likely his daughter.

[324], [306], [498]

She married Nathan STEVENS bef 1805. [498] birth of Nathan Jr. Born ? . Nathan died ? . Occupation: Clothier. [497] aka: Stephens. [306]

[585], [293], [295] Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, St. Albans, VT. [293] Death Cause: Consumption. [585] Occupation: Farmer. [585]

Benjamin Basford/Died.Mar. 11, 1872/___ yrs. ___ mos./& 28 ds.

There was a Catharine Basford (age 12, b. VT) living with their son Alonzo in the 1850 census. [388] Could she be another daughter of Benjamin and Sally?

There was a Schuyler Basford who married Filura Blake (b. 1824, the daughter of John and Filura (Campbell) Blake, grandaughter of John and Elizabeth (Basford) Blake). [324] Perhaps he was also a son of Benjamin and Sally?

One set of notes indicates that he was born 1772, Alexandria, NH. [299]

[19], [2], [299], [467], [314], [312], [472], [580], [585], [313], [586], [578], [587], [413], [293], [295]

He married Sally PERRIGO, daughter of Rufus PERRIGO (1761->1833) & Anna HURLBUT (~1767-?), abt 1812. [37] Born abt 13 Dec 1797 in Willisborough, NY. [588] age 79 years 5 months 9 days at death. Sally died in St. Albans, VT, on 22 May 1877. [588], [293], [295] Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, St. Albans, VT. [293] Death Cause: Typhoid Pneumonia. [588]

Sally’s death certificate gives her mother’s name as Prudence. [588] However, other sources indicate that Rufus had a first wife Prudence Hurlbut who was the mother of his first two children, and then he married second Prudence’s sister Anna Hurlbut and had twelve more children. [37] It is not clear whether Prudence and Anna are really different names for the same person, or whether Rufus was really married two times.

[37] gives birth as abt 1795, Stephantown, NY.
