He was working at a saw and grist mill, running off the belt of the drum, when his shirt sleeve was caught in the bolts, tearing off his right arm and horribly mangling his body. [1407]

On 16 Oct 1868, it was reported that “one of the events of the past week in the town of Hopkinton has been the elopement of a man named Henry Basford, with a woman named Harriet Daly. Basford left a wife and children in indigent circumstances, and Mrs. Daly who has not for some time resided with her husband, left three small children, the youngest an infant of a few months, alone in her dwelling. Her absence was not discovered until some hours had elapsed, when the babe was found exhausted from crying, and with the skin worn from its arms in its struggle to free itself from the chair in which it was tied. The children were cared for by the overseers of the poor, and subsequently conveyed to Tewksbury.” [1408]

On her marriage record, her parents names are given as Michael and Annie Elsworth. Her age was given as 48 (corresponding to a birthdate of abt 1848), and her birthplace was given as Princeton, ME. [786]

[652] lists entries for George M. Basford marrying both Louise M. Day and Louise M. Elsworth on the same date. Presumably, Elsworth was her maiden name since other sources indicate that her name was “Mrs. Louise M. Day.”

He changed his name to Charles Roscoe Craig in 1880. It is not clear what motivated this change. The reasons he gave for wanting to change names was that he had been going by that name for the previous 10 years, that he and his wife got married under that name, and that his two minor children had taken Craig as there last name.
