In the 1850 census for Hampdon, Penobscot Co., ME, p. 265, there is a Josephine Basford, age 4, b. ME, living with a Wardwell family. [354] She is listed on the same page as Benjamin Basford who is probably her father. Presumably her mother had died and her father could not take care of her? She is listed with her father in 1860, but Benjamin’s wife Clara would be Josephine’s step-mother. [364]
