I assume that the Benjamin Basford listed with Sally Basford in the 1850 federal census for Hampdon, Penobscot Co., ME would be her son. [354] His daughter Josephine is living with another family, so I assume he must have been left a widower. Josephine is living with Benjamin in 1860. Presumably Benjamin’s wife Clara would be his second marriage.
Benjamin’s death record gives the name of his parents as James and Sarah (Higgins) Basford. [341] While I am not aware of any such James Basford, Jonathan Basford is known to have married a Sally Higgins. I am assuming that the death record probably listed his father’s name incorrectly.
On 7 Oct 1836, John Basford deposed that “Benjamin Basford of Hampden ... is ... insane and incapable to take care of himself.” He requested an inquisition by made and that a guardian be appointed for Benjamin. [640] I assume that this would be Benjamin the son of Jonathan and Sally Basford, and that John would be his brother.
