Seventh Generation (Continued)
Seventh Generation (Continued)
Family of Benjamin S. BASFORD (263) & Abigail JOHNSON
640. Ruel David BASFORD (Benjamin S.6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 1843 in Illinois. [1019], [805] age 17 in 1860 census, age 27 in 1870 census. Ruel David died in Prairie, MO, prob. 1 Sep 1913. [1664] Occupation: Plasterer. [805] aka: David R., Frank R. [1069]

He served in the Civil War in Company C of the 66th Illinois Infantry. His residence at the time of his muster on 18 Sep 1862 was given as Paris, IL. It is noted that he “deserted to the enemy 21 Nov 1862.” [1694]

1866 city directory for Des Moines, IA shows Ruel D. Basford, plasterer living at Woodland Ave, between 10th and 11th. [549]

He is listed with his parents in the 1870 federal census for DesMoines 2nd Ward, Polk Co., Iowa, taken on 25 Jul 1870. His age is given as 27, and his birthplace is Illinois. His occupation is listed as Plasterer. [805] But he also appears to be listed under his own record:

1870 federal census for DesMoines 2nd Ward, Polk Co., IA, 2 Jul 1870 [805]
R. D. Basford, male, age 28, b. IL,. plasterer
Elvira, age 19, female, b. IA

He is probably the R. D. Basford who married Mary Ann Ross on 23 Apr 1872, Montgomery, KS. [1695]

He is probably the same person as the Frank R. Bassford who married Anna Blakely on 23 Sep 1875 in Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, [1696] and the Frank R. Basford (age 32), who married Ida Jane Dodgson (age 19) on 3 Mar 1880 in Neosho, KS. [1697]

This would be the same Frank R. Basford who is listed in the1880 federal census for Parson, Labette Co., KS, p. 456C [1066]
Frank R. Bassford, male, head, age 33, b. IN, father b. IN, mother b. IN, plasterer & b. mason
Ida J., female, wife, age 19, b. IL, father b. IL, mother b. IL, keeping house

The death certificate for Frank R. Basford gives his parents names as Benjamin Basford (b. VA) and Abigail Johnson (b. NY), which confirms that Frank has the same parents as Ruel. [1664] No census records have been found for Frank in 1850, 1856, 1860 and 1870, and no census records have been found for Ruel in 1880 or later, which would be consistent with this hypothesis that they are the same person. The census records for Ruel and Frank both show the occupation of plasterer, which adds further circumstantial evidence. Additionally, Frank R. Basford married Alvira More (or Almira Ware) on 17 Sep 1866 in Polk Co., IA. [1698] This is consistent with the name of Ruel’s wife being “Elvira” in the 1870 census. However, Frank’s death certificate dated 1 Sep 1913 gives his birthdate as 22 Dec 1830 (in Virginia) and his age as 83. [1664] This birthdate would is inconsistent with the 1837 marriage date of Benjamin and Abigail, and is also inconsistent with the ages given for both Ruel and Frank in the various census records (which themselves are not very consistent). Presumably the birthdate would be incorrect.

He would probably be the Frank R. Basford (age 51) of Cass Co., MO, who married Mary Anne Curtis (age 35) on 29 Sep 1894 in Kansas City, KS. [1697]

1900 federal census for Green Twp., Platte Co., MO, 4 Jun 1900, p. 42A [1061]
