Studied architecture in Boston at the school of Charles Painter. Not long after he entered the school, the Civil War broke out, and he enlisted in Co. B of the 44th Massachusetts infantry in Sep 1862. Before he enlisted, he was living at Newton, MA. His unit was mustered out 18 Jun 1863, and he was discharged at Readville, MA. He then moved to Portland, ME and set up a joint architecture practice with Thomas J. Sparrow. The partnership lasted no more than a year, then he and his wife, Hannah, moved to St. Paul, MN, arriving there in Nov 1866. He was a very successful architect in that city. [1335], [1334]
