He is listed with his mother in the 1850 census, even though it is reported that he had already moved to Ohio.29

He removed to Xenia, OH where he married Martha Allen. He Removed to Leavenworth, KS in 1858. He was there during the “Kansas troubles,” and he returned to Xenia when his establishment was burned.21,17

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted as a private on 3 Oct 1861, and was promoted to captain two months later on 5 Dec 1861. He mustered into the 4th Ohio Infantry on 18 Jan 1862. He rose to lieutenant colonel on 11 Aug 1862 when he transferred to the 94th Ohio Infantry. He later rose to the rank of colonel. He was on the famous march from Atlanta when he received word that this wife had died. He resigned and returned home to take care of his family.21,17,11

He third married Anna Clara ROEMER, daughter of Johann Friedrich Wilhelm ROEMER & Christine Caroline SALZ, on 29 Sep 1903 in Bronx, NY.112 Born on 30 Aug 1848 in Minden Stadt, Westfalen, Preussen.20 Anna Clara was baptized in Sankt Simeonis Evangelisch, Minden Stadt, Westfalen, Preussen, on 17 Sep 1848. Anna Clara died in New York City, NY, on 5 Nov 1924.12,131 age 75. Buried on 8 Nov 1924 in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.12 Death Cause: Diabetes.11 aka: Annie, Romer, Rohmur.

Her death certificate gives her parents’s names as William Romer and Caroline Salz.131 The 1900 census gives her birth as Aug 1848, Germany.96 Her birthplace is given as Berlin, Germany on her daughter Martha’s birth certificate.122 She is probably the Anna Clara Roemer b. 30 Aug 1848, Minden Stadt, Westfalen, Preussen, the daughter of Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Roemer and Christine Caroline Salz.20

She is probably the Anne Romer, age 7, who came to America on 6 Aug 1855 aboard the ship Palestine with her mother Caroline, age 29, and sister Rebecca, age 8 months.130

There is some conflicting data regarding her marriage to Stephen Bassford. Stephen indicated they were married 24 May 1870, Jersey City, NJ on a questionaire he filled out as part of his Civil War pension applicatoin.128 We have a copy of a marriage certificate for Stephen A. Bassford and Ann C. Romer dated 29 Sep 1903, Bronx, NY.112 Perhaps they were married, divorced and then remarried? Or perhaps they were never officially married, or were unable to prove their marriage to the satisfaction of th pension department? The 1903 marriage certificate indicates that it was Stephen’s third marriage and Anna’s first. This is consistent with the fact that Stephen was married twice before (to Olive Warner and Martha Allen).

The census data is also a little confusing. Stephen’s wife Annie in the 1880 census was listed as being born in England, but in 1900 his wife Anna was born in Germany, which is consistent with the 1903 marriage certificate. (Although both of these dates predate the 1903 marriage.) The ages of the wives in the two entries are close enough that they could be the same women, but the different birthplaces are inconsistent with this (although errors like this are common in the census records).

On 16 Apr 1906, the Committee on Pensions granted an increase in her widow’s pension baesd on Stephen’s service in the Civil War. At that time she was found to be without any property except for her household furniture, and had no means of support and was dependent upon the daily labor of her oldest child. An affidavit of Dr. Edward F. Brennan indicated that she was suffering from general debility and rheumatism, and at times was hardly able to walk.119

She was living with the family of her daughter Martha in the 1920 census for East Conemaugh, Cambria Co., PA.133

12,2,20,107,10,17,22,132,51,96,98,130,109,16,11,102,113,116,134,135,133,119,122,104,131,123,125

They had the following children:
69i.
William A. (Died as Child) (1871-1871)
70ii.
Eugene Earl (Died Unmarried) (1872-1910)
71iii.
Martha Allen (1874-1955)
72iv.
Mabel Kate (1881-~1915)

Witnesses to the marriage were John A. Bassford and Margaret A. Bassford.112 These would probably be Stephens son and daughter-in-law.

Stephen’s Civil War pension records indicate that they were married 24 May 1870, Jersey City, NJ by Rev. Allison.68,119 However, no record of this marriage has been found in the Jersey City records, and a marriage certificate for 1903 has been located. Perhaps no official record of their marriage could be located and they decided to reaffirm their marriage to provide official documentation? Another possibility is that they were not officially married until 1903, although they apparently lived together and had four children. Perhaps she was still married to Richard Renckwitz? A third possibility is that Stephen and Anna were married and divorced then remarried, although this is contradictory to the depositions in Stephen’s pension application which state that Stephen and Anna lived together as man and wife from the time of their marriage on 24 May 1870 until Stephen’s death.

He served in the Civil War.17 He is probably the Major Abraham Bassford who shot Joseph T. Donnelly during an altercation at a bar in New York City on 20 Aug 1863. Mr. Donnelly got into an argument with a Col. Mott and while being restrained by some friends kicked Maj. Bassford in the throat. When Mr. Donnelly broke away from his friends to attack Maj. Bassford, Maj. Bassford shot him in the neck. Mr. Donnelly died in the hospital a few days later, and there was a coroner’s inquisition into the death. At the inquest there was a split jury with two of the jurors in favor of Bassford’s acquittal, and six that held him responsible for the homicide. It is not clear what was the final disposition of the case.144,145,146
