219 gives her maiden name as Emily E. January, the daughter of WIlliam A. January. However, 75 indicates that Henry Bassford was survived by three step-children “Mrs. Weston Robinson and Miss Helen January of Berkeley and John January of Oakland.” This would suggest that “January” was the name of a first husband of Emily rather than her maiden name.

He was a champion pigeon shot.17

In 1883, Frank went on a seal hunting expedition to Alaska. Several days after arriving in the north aboard a vessel, Bassford, along with two other men, were assigned to a small boat, and along with several other small boats, were sent out to shoot seals. According to the captain of the vessel in a later interview, a fog came up, separating Bassford's boat from the others. Shots were heard from the direction of the boat, but they could not be located. Bassford and his two partners were never seen again and were given up for lost.80

Rumors later circulated in 1899 that Frank J. Bassford was being held for poaching as a prisoner by the Russians on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The article refers to a brother “ex-assemlyman E. M. Bassford”.221 It is not clear whether this would be some unknown borther, or whether the newspaper had the initials wrong. Another account gives the location of the imprisonment as Siberia.222 This article indicates that he had been “mourned for dead for five years,” so it is not clear whether the 1883 date given in 80 is correct, or whether perhaps it should have been 1893.
