However, the birth record Matthew Laing Clark (b. 9 Feb 1839, bp. 20 Jul 1840) shows him to be the son of Henry Harris & Lydia Clark, and indicates that Lydia was the daughter of James & Olive Scofield. [494] The will of Elizabeth (Basford) Gates leaves bequests to William Gates Clark, Adelaide Clark and Oliver Carpenter Clark, children of Henry Harris Clark and the late Lidy Scofield. However, it does not confirm whether Lydia was her daughter or not. [460] One possibility is that she was the biological daughter of the Scofields, but was adopted into the Gates family.
