He removed with his family to Naples, ID in 1931. He graduated from high school in Bonners Ferry, ID in 1936, and enrolled at Whitworth College at Spokane, graduating in 1940. After graduation he returned to Montana as a high school teacher in Dodson, MT. He later accepted the position of football/basketball coach at Hobson High School. He received an appointment as a reserve Cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT during World War II, graduating in Feb 1946. He was commissioned as an Ensign and was sent to the Aleutians, participating in the landing involved with the retaking of Attu and Kiska Islands from the Japanese. He was then transferred to the South Pacific and was involved with the initial landings on Leyte and Mindoro. After his ship was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze, he was reassigned to the U.S.S. Codington AKA. He returned to the U.S. in Apr 1946, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, serving in Helena, MT and Boise, ID.
