Second Generation
Second Generation
Family of Thomas BASFORD (1) & Rachel (BASFORD)
2. Thomas BASFORD (Thomas1). Born ? . Thomas died in Anne Arundel Co., MD, bet 5 Mar 1781 and 17 Jul 1782. [10] will dated and proved.

He is mentioned in his father’s will. [2], [9]

He is probably the Thomas Bafford listed in the 1776 census of All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD, with 2 white males, 1 white female, 4 white children and 2 taxables. [11]

He is probably the Thomas Basford who signed the oath of fidelity in Anne Arundel Co., MD in 1777. [11]

A Thomas Basford took the oath of fidelity before the Honorable Richard Harwood, Jr. on 1 Mar 1778. [12] It is not clear whether this would be him or his son.

Will dated 5 Mar 1781, proved 17 Jul 1782. His son John was executor. Witnesses were Leonard Sellman, Richard Davis. All of his estate was to go to his wife (unnamed) unless she remarry, then it was to be divided between all of his children equally. His wife was to clothe son Richard “when she thinks him in most need.” Inventory of his estate was taken 20 Aug 1782. Signing as “nearest kindred” to the inventory were Frederick Basford and Thomas Fowler Basford. His wife died before 6 Mar 1789 when final distribution of his estate was made to John Basford, Thomas Basford, Richard Basford, Frederick Basford, Zachariah Basford, Benjamin Basford, Jemima Basford and Rachel Basford who married Isaac Nicols. [10] (Presumably this son Thomas Basford was the same person as the Thomas Fowler Basford who was a witness to the inventory will?)

[13] gives another son William who served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Fifth Company of the First Maryland Regiment.

He married Susanna FOWLER, daughter of William FOWLER & Susannah DUVALL, ? . Born on 24 Jan 1726 in Prince George’s Co., MD. [12] Susanna died bef 6 Mar 1789. [10] son John made final distribtion of husband’s estate.

She was taxed in the 1783 assessment of Road River Hundred, Anne Arundel Co., MD, along with Frederick, Benjamin (pauper) and John Basford [18], [19]

A number of sources show her surname as Fowler and her parents as William and Susannah (Duvall) Fowler, [20], [15] although I have not seen any primary source information to verify this.

Estate papers filed 6 Aug 1828 (Equity Case #912) indicate that Stephen Basford, late of Allegany Co., deceased, died intestate leaving considerable real estate in Frederick Co., and that Rachel Kinley, Martha Clarke, Mary Clarke, Henrietta Wilson and Nancy Crum were the only children and heirs of Stephen. Nancy Cram had also died intestate leaving children William, Catharine, John, Steven and Susanna Cram, all residing in Frederick Co. [22]

The account of his estate, dated 9 Mar 1830, lists heirs Rachel Kinley; Mary wife of John Clark; Martha wife of Richard Clark; Henrietta, wife of Otho Wilson; and William, John, Stephen, Catherine and Susanna Crum. [27]

[14] gives death as 1827.
