Her obituary indicates that she was “the former Etta Overman-Chase of St. Louis.” [458] It is not clear whether Overman might have been the name of a first husband?

He was a private secretary to Congressman Champ Clark (who served in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1891-1921). He did a lot of research on the Basford family of Maryland. [265] He entered politics to earn money to start a medical career but he never went back. He became secretary to Champ Clark in 1897, and in 1912 managed Clark’s unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination against Woodrow Wilson. During te 1920s, Wallace worked for te Democratic Party, serving as publicity director for the National Committee for four years. He served as special assistant to the COmmissioner of Immigration in the labor Department from 1930 to 1933. Before working for Rep. Clark, he had been a newspaper reprter (for the Kansas City Star, the St. Louis Times and the Mexico Ledger) and a medical student, receiving a medical degree from the University of Missouri. [462]

He was a widower, and was living with his father at the time of the 1900 census. [224]
