In 1884 Gertrude Mitchell was living with Charles and Alice (Stone) Toney in Macon, GA. [321] Alice would be her mother’s half-sister.

Her death certificate appears to give date of death as 20 Sep 1918, [308] which is inconsistent with date of 21 Sep 1918 given in obituary and cemetery records. [139], [328] However, the date is a little unclear and the day could possibly be “21.”

He was a fireman, serving in Hose Co., No. 4, and later at the Elizabeth Street Station. He was a local historian for Harrisonburg, VA, and dean of the firemen and band musicians. He played in several bands including the Eshman Band and the Old Daily News Band. He played with John Phillip Sousa at the Cotton Exposition in Atlanta in 1895. [148]

He wrote several books about the history of Harrisonburb, VA. (Sketches of Harrisonburg, 1840-1940; Sketches of Harriosnburg Schools and Firemen’s Organizations, 1833-1942; The Evolution of Harrisonburg, 1788-1945; Landmarks and Personages of Old Harrisonburg, 1840-1940; Railroads of the Shenandoah Valley; The Churhes of Harrisonburg).

In [335], Kirby gives his birthdate as 17 Mar 1867. [142] and [94] also give his birthdate as 17 Mar 1867, [333] gives his birthdate as 17 Mar 1868. These dates are inconsistent with the date of 10 Mar 1866 given in his official birth record. [153]

[142] gives the name of his grandparents as Oliver C. Bassford, b. 1788, and Elizabeth Woodward. This is inconsistent with the supposition that his father Thomas W. Bassford’s parents were Jacob and Parmelia (Woodward) Basford. I don’t find a record of any Oliver Bassfords in the census records who would be candidates to be this man. Is it possible that this information is incorrect, or possibly that Oliver was a middle name for Jacob? The Woodward name seems to lend some credence to this hypothesis.

A James W. Bassford, age 2 months, and an Edith M. Bassford, age 15 months, are buried in the same plot as Kirby in the Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. [94] Perhaps they are additional children for Kirby and Clara?

Death certificate gives birthdate as 17 Mar 1867. [308]

[159] gives birth as 19 Mar 1867.

He married Clara Regina CAVEY, daughter of Joseph CAVEY & Alice SLOAN, on 28 Dec 1896 in Harrisonburg, VA. [336], [149] Born on 27 Sep 1874 in Harpers Ferry, WV. [339], [308] Clara Regina died in Rockingham Co., VA, on 4 Dec 1961. [339], [308] Buried on 7 Dec 1961 in Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, VA. [309]

Her obituary indicates that she died on a Monday (the date of the obituary is not known). [324] Cemetery records give her death as 7 Dec 1961, but I assume that must be her burial date rather than her death date since that date would have been a Thursday. [309] Presumably, her death date would be the preceding Monday, which would be 4 Dec 1961.

Her birthplace is given as Woodstock, MA(?) on her marriage license. [149]

[12], [160], [325], [326], [161], [309], [336], [148], [339], [149], [308], [334]
