92. Thomas Woodward BASFORD (Jacob4, John3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Born on 11 Oct 1818 in Prince George’s Co., MD. [138] Thomas Woodward died in Rockingham Co., VA, on 12 Mar 1900. [139], [140], [94] age 84. Buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, VA. [139], [94] Death Cause: Pneumonia. [140] Occupation: Carpenter, Cabinet Maker. aka: Bassford.

He was apprenticed to a noted cabinet maker in Alexandria, VA., by the name of Green, at the age of 16, for a period of four years. [138]

On 3 Apr 1839, Thomas W. Basford of Prince George’s Co., MD sold to John A. Atkinson of Baltimore Co., Md. for $210.27 a farm in Prince George’s Co. on the Patuxent River where Thomas Watkins then resided (who was part owner of the said land) the estate representing Thomas’s interest in the estate of his mother Parmelia Basford late of Prince George’s Co. [141]

He is probably the Thomas W. Basford who removed to Harrisonburg, VA. This Thomas was identified in his obituary as being a native of Prince George’s Co., MD. [140] (It is also possible that he is the Thomas Basford who was living in Calvert Co., MD at the time of the 1860 census. [72] John H. Basford, the son of Jacob and Parmelia (Woodward) Basford, is also living in Calvert Co., which presents some circumstantial evidence to support this hypothesis. However, this Thomas shows up as John T. Basford in the 1870 Prince Frederick, Dist. 1, Calvert Co., MD, p. 56. [87] This would seem to be inconsistent with the middle initial of W. given in the 1839 land record.)

A biographical sketch for Thomas’ son Kirby gives the name of his grandparents as Oliver C. Bassford, b. 1788, and Elizabeth Woodward. [142] This is inconsistent with the supposition that Thomas’ parents were Jacob and Parmelia (Woodward) Basford. However, I don’t find a record of any Oliver Bassfords in the census records who would be candidates to be this man. Is it possible that this information is incorrect, or possibly that Oliver was a middle name for Jacob? The Woodward name for jacob’s wife seems to lend some credence to this hypothesis, although the first names don’t match.

He removed to Harrisonburg, VA late in 1840, accompanied by William Bamber, another cabinet-maker, and located in an old log house on the corner of West Elizabeth and North German streets, and engaged in making furniture and coffins. [138] He worshipped at the Old Church on the Hill, later at Andrew Chapel M.E. Church South (dedicated 1851). Although opposed to secession, he volunteered in the C.S. Army and served three years. With P. S. Thomas, he superintended the construction of the first water system of Harrisonburg.” [12]

He was a fire chief in Harrisonburg, VA. [143]
