[7], [48], [12], [50]

46. Susana BASFORD (Benjamin3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Born ? . Susana died ? . aka: Susan. [35]

[7] and [50] show her marrying William Shurlock on 11 Jan 1813, Anne Arundel Co., MD. However, this seems somewhat unlikely since she appears to be one of the younger children of Benjamin given the order that the children are listed in his will.

[7], [35], [48], [12], [50]

47. Henry BASFORD (Benjamin3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Born abt 1806-1807 in Maryland. [71], [72] age 44 in 1850 census, age 53 in 1860 census. Henry died in Anne Arundel Co., MD, bet 1860 and 1870. [72], [87] census data.

The Henry Basford who married Catherine Mullikin is probably the son of Benjamin and Ann (Whitington) Basford, although this has not been proven. The fact that Ann Sheckels is listed with them in the 1860 census is one piece of circumstantial evidence that supports this hypothesis. [72] (The first wife of Benjamin Basford was a Scheckell, so Ann would probably be a cousin of some kind.) Another piece of circumstantial evidence is provided in the land records. Henry Basford, identified to be the son of Benjamin, bought the tract of land known as “Mount Pleasant” from William H. Wood in 1848. [114] This tract of land was signed over to Plummer Drury on 28 Nov 1854. [115] On 6 Mar 1856, Plummer Drury sold this land to Catherine A. Basford and her children. [116] Presumably, this Catharine would be the Catharine Mullican who married Henry Basford.

Some sources indicate that Henry, the son of Benjamin and Ann (Whittington) Basford, was the one who married Margaret Clagett and ELiza Clagett. [50] However, other sources suggest that that Henry was probably the son of Henry and Mary (Watkins) Basford. [12]

On 27 Nov 1827, Ann Basford of Anne Arundel Co. sold to Henry Basford of Anne Arundel Co. for $5 current money in hand 2 parts of land "Bear Ridge" and "Sorry Bargain. She also sold to Henry Basford for $1 two feather beds, two milk cows, five hogs, 10 barrels of corn, etc.. Henry was to pay $40 by 22 Dec 1827 on a mortgage Ann had taken out. [53] This most certainly was her son.

On 2 Apr 1835, Henry Basford, Jr. and wife Margaret bought land in Prince George’s Co. from the heirs of Joseph Jones. [12] Probably this would be the Henry who married Margaret Clagett, but It is possible that this is the same Henry who married Katherine Mullikin. If so, the wife Margaret must have died between 1835 and 1839 when Henry married Katherine Mullikin.

He might be the Henry Bassford listed in the 1840 federal census for 1st District, Anne Arundel Co., MD, p. 125. [68]
Henry Bassford
2 males 5-9
1 male 30-39
1 female 20-29
2 females 30-39
1 female 70-79
(If this is the right Henry, are the young children from a previous marriage since Henry didn’t marry Katherine until 1839? Unless they might be the children of one of the other women listed with the family?)

It is also possible that he is the Henry Basford listed in the 1840 federal census for 1st & 2nd Dist., Prince George's Co., MD, p. 12 [68]
Henry Basford
1 male under 5
1 male 30-39
1 female under 5
2 females 20-29
(Again, if this is true, then the children would presumably be from a prior marriage.)

On 10 Jan 1848, Henry Basford, of Benjamin (so stated in the tramsactions), bought a piece of land containing 176 Acres known as "Mount Pleasant" from William H. Wood and his wife Mary for $2000 . William Woods held the mortgage for $1000 made by Henry Basford. [114]

On 12 Sept 1853, William H. Wood took Henry Basford to court. Frank H Stocket was appointed trustee to sell "Mt. Pleasent”. [117] Henry Basford signed over Deed to Mt. Pleasant to Plummer Drury on 28 Nov 1854 via the trustee. [115]

[7], [35], [68], [71], [72], [12], [50]

He married Catherine Ann MULLIKIN on 21 Feb 1839 in Prince Georges Co., MD. [35] Born abt 1812-1820 in Maryland. [71], [72], [87], [118] age 30 in 1850 census, age 43 in 1860 census, age 58 in 1870 census, age 63 in 1880 census. Catherine Ann died in Prince George’s Co., MD, on 6 Apr 1889. [12], [94] Buried in Trinity Episcopal Cemetery, Upper Marlboro, Prince George’s Co., MD. [94] aka: Katherine, Ann.

On 6 Mar 1856, an indenture was made between Plummer Drury on one part and Catharine A. Basford and all the children she has or may have by her present husband of the other part. Plummer Drury conveyed for $1300 the tract of land known as "Mount Pleasant" (176 Acres) which was conveyed to William H. Wood by deed from Joseph I Harris and his wife Matilda B. Harris on 6 Nov 1834 (WSG19: 386), and afterward conveyed to Henry Basford by deed from William H. Wood and Margaret his wife on 10 Jan 1848 (JHW3), and afterwards conveyed to Plummer Drury by deed from trustee Frank Stocket (28 Nov 1854 NHG4:165), to Catharine
A. Basford, her children and heirs. Providing Plummer Drury may erect a seine reel and have a landing for his seine and boat at the most convenient place on the (Patuxent) river and wide enough for an ox cart from said landing. Signed Plummer Drury and Thomas W. Harris. Recorded 23 Sept 1856. [116] This represents added evidence that the Henry Basford who married Catherine A. Mullikin was the son of Benjamin and Ann (Whitington) Basford since the 1848 transaction between Henry and William Wood identifies the Henry who purchased this land as being the son of Benjamin.

In 1870, she and many of the children are listed in a household headed by her son James. [87]

In 1880 she was living with her daughter Emma. [118]

Anne Arundel Circuit Court records This case was not because
there was desention in the familiy, but because the land could not be
divided equallly and there were minor children involved and guardians
had to be appointed for them. [119]

Catharine A. Bassford is named in a court case on 16 Oct 1884 to resolve the division of the land obtained from Plummer Drury. (This case was not because of dissention in the familiy, but because the land could not be divided equallly and there were minor children involved and guardians had to be appointed for them.) Also named were George W. Bassford and wife Alice; James H. Basford and Mary, his wife; Benjamin F. Basford and Susan C, his wife; Mary C. Norfolk and Benjamine A.. Norfolk her husband; Jane I. Drury and James R. Drury, her husband; Laura V. Garner and James A. Garner, her husband. Catharine A. Basford and her children were seized in common of real estate deeded to them by Plummer Drury known as "Mt. Pleasent," land that could not be divided equally. Each child acknowleged that their father, Henry Basford, was dead. [120]

Horace Fell was appointed guardian for the infant children of mother Alice M. Shepherd, deceased, dau of Catharine A. Basford. Namely James A. Shepherd, Robert E. Shepherd. William H. Shepherd, and laura E. Shepherd. A. S. Bryon was appointed guardian for the infant children of Emma F. Smith, deceased, daughter of Catharine A. Basford. Her surviving children were Laura C. Smith, Rosie R. Smith and Emma F. Smith. Gilbert Smith testified that he thought he was entitled to a life estate in the share of his deceased wife part. [120]

Edward C. Gantt was the trustee for the estate, which was sold at public sale on 1 Dec 1885 to Gilbert Smith for $924 (Land Record SH27:107). There was a letter in the papers from George W. Basford of Baltimore, MD to the trustee telling him that he thought his Mother's estate should be sold as quickly as possible as no one had lived there for many years and it was badly in need of repairs. This is how the property was advertized. Two Dwellings, Barn, Outbuildings, Store House, Warehouse and steam boat landing. [120]
