Most of the children of Henry and Mary have not been positively identified. Gassaway and Henry, Jr. are probable sons, but this conclusion is drawn purely from circumstantial evidence. Other possibilities would be Jacob Basford (b. abt 1801-1804, MD) who married Margaret Clare Shepherd on 1 Sep 1825, Anne Arundel Co., MD; [66] and Adam Basford ( b. abt 1810-1814, MD) who married Malinda Wharton on 24 Apr 1834, Ohio Co., WV. 24. Jacob BASFORD (John3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Born ? in Anne Arundel Co., MD. Jacob died aft 26 Apr 1834. [73] land sale.

He may be the Jacob Bassford who served as a private in the 2nd Regiment of Virginia Militia during the War of 1812.

On 7 Mar 1818, Jacob Basford of Prince George’s Co. purchased land from Thomas and Octavia Woodward of Washington Co., MD, the land being where Jacob Basford lives. On 21 Aug 1818, he purchased land (being where he was living, part of "Ample Grange", “Frey's Choice,” and "Levy.") from William and Cassandra McFarlin of Anne Arundel Co. (These lands were apparently bought from Woodward heirs.) [12]

Jacob's father, John, made his will 2 Nov 1810, which was proved 1 Oct 1818. His sons Jacob and Henry were executors. Jacob received outright the land "Champs Adventure" his father bought from Joseph Hall, and also free use of several pieces of land for 2-1/2 years that John Basford had resurveyed into one plot called "Elizabeth's Fancy" in 1815. (Jacob’s brother Henry lived on this land in 1829.) Jacob was of Prince Georges Co., MD on 14 Jan 1819 when he applied to Orphans Court to take out letters of administration. [31]

1 male slave under 14

2 female slaves 45 and up

1 male free colored 26-44
Probably his wife had died before this time since there are no free women listed in the household. (Unless perhaps they were separated or divorced?) It would also appear that one of his sons is missing from the ennumeration. Perhaps he was living with other relatives after the death of Jacob’s wife?

On the 3 Mar 1820, Jacob was of Prince George’s Co. when he and his brothers and sisters signed off their interest in a 14-3/4 acres of land (part of "Elizabeth's Fancy") his father had sold before his death. [12]

He is probably the Jacob Basford who married Sarah Patterson on 21 Mar 1822 in Washington, D.C. [74] When he sells land in 1834, wife Sarah relinquishes her dower. [73] Presumably, Permelia had died before this time. This is consistent with the fact that no wife is listed in the 1820 census.

On 4 May 1822 Jacob Basford of A.A. Co. registered 10 negro's he removed from the District of Columbia to the state of MD. He acquired these slaves on his intermarriage with Sarah Patterson of Alexandria, VA. [75]

On Dec 1824, Jacob Basford bought three slaves from Jacob Wheeler. [76] On 9 Jul 1825 Henry Basford, Sr. sold to Jacob Basford/Stephen Beard 4 slaves, household goods, 2 horses, 2 yolks of oxen. [12]

On 17 Mar 1829, Jacob Basford mortgaged to Reed Cross of Alexandria, VA (husband of his sister Sarah) for $832, using 4 adult slaves as security. The debt was to be paid by 16 Mar 1832. [77]

On 27 Nov. 1829, Jacob Basford of Prince George’s Co. mortgaged land in Anne Arundel Co. formally occupied by John Basford, Sr., now in possession of brother Henry Basford, plus several negroes. The debt was to be paid by 24 May 1831. [78]

On Dec 29 1829, Jacob Basford mortaged his tobacco crop for $300.00 plus interest to John C. Tuesbury of Prince George’s Co. The debt was to be paid by 1 Jun 1830. [79]

On 26 Apr 1834, Jacob Basford and wife of Prince George’s Co. sold to Thomas Watkins of Anne Arundel Co. for $200 his part of "Ample Grange" and "Freys Choice,” located next to the late John Boyd Watkins’ land on the North and William Bouric's land on the west, on the south by land owned by the late Benjamin Boyd and east by the Patuxant River. Sarah Basford relinquished her dower. [73]

[18], [47], [31], [26], [51], [33], [12]

He first married Parmelia WOODWARD on 14 Dec 1814 in Prince George’s Co., MD. [51] Born ? . Parmelia died prob. bef 1 Mar 1822. [12] marriage intentions for husband Jacob. aka: Promelia, Amelia. [12]

She probably died before 1 Mar 1822 when Jacob Basford (probably her husband) announced intentions to marry Sarah Patterson in Washington, D. C. [12] This would be consistent with the fact that no women are listed in the household in the 1820 census. [26] (Unless perhaps they were separated or divorced?)

[51], [12]

They had the following children:
91i.
John H. (~1814-1888)
92ii.
Thomas Woodward (1818-1900)

He second married Sarah PATTERSON on 21 Mar 1822 in Washington, D.C. [74] Born ? . Sarah died aft 26 Apr 1834. [73] relinquished dower on land record.

[12], [74]

25. Rev. Thomas BASFORD (John3, Thomas2, Thomas1). Born on 21 Sep 1784 in Anne Arundel Co., MD. [12] age 74 on 21 Sep 1858. Thomas died in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD, on 22 Sep 1858. [12] Buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Baltimore, MD. [80], [81] Occupation: Math Teacher, Principal. [12] aka: Bassford. [68], [71]

He served in Capt. Sands Co., 22nd Reg. in the War of 1812. [12]

He was mentioned in his father’s will. He was of Baltimore, MD on 16 Jan 1819 when he signed papers indicating that he had been notified of the intention of his brother Jacob to take out letters of administration for his beloved father. [31]

On 26 Jun 1833, Thomas and his wife Maria of Baltimore, MD sold their interest in his father John’s land in Anne Arundel Co. to Richeard Merriot. [12]

He is probably the “T. Bassford” who owned a owned the Basford & Son dry goods store in Baltimore, together with this son “A. Bassford.” [82] The father and son dissolved their partnership on 12 Feb 1834, with the father continuing to operate the business. [83]

It has been suggested that the Mary Ann Basford, b. abt 1821, who married Edward V. Orrell on 17 Aug 1835 in Baltimore Co., MD may be a daugther of Thomas and his first wife. Cornelia Basford, b. abt 1820, d. 1895, who married John Chamberlain on 17 Oct 1838 is another possible daughter. [84]
