1165. Charles G. BASFORD (Charles Egbert7, Benjamin H.6, David5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 22 Feb 1864 in Franklin Co., NY. [293] Charles G. died in Del Norte, CO, on 30 May 1945. [37], [293] Buried in Del Norte Cemetery, Del Norte, Rio Grande Co., CO. [293] aka: Bassford. [1959]
It is not proven that he was the son of Charles E. Basford. Oral family history indicates that the Charles G. Basford who married Sarah Lena “Mamie” Williams and had a daughter Mabel Pearl Bassford, b. 27 Jun 1887, Constable, Franklin Co., NY was a son of Charles E. Basford. The most likely candidate for this Charles would be the son of Benjamin and Eliza Basford of Ft. Covington, Franklin Co., NY. [1817]
He abandoned his family, and his wife was remarried to her cousin Willard Masco. He had a reputation as a bum. [1817]
He was living in the same town as his daughter Mabel at the time of the 1930 ederal census for Main Road no of River, Precinct 11, ED 13, Rio Grande Co., CO, p. 2B [1958]

He applied for an “Old Age Pension” on 3 Jul 1935 in Archuleta Co., CO. He indicates that he was born 22 Feb 1861 in New York City, NY, and that he had lived in Archuleta Co. for 6 years, residing on Durango Rd. He said that his wife died 35 years ago. [2253] The birthday agrees with the day/month given by the IGI (22 Feb 1865), but the year is different. [37]
He was living in the same town as his son Charles Masco at the time of the 1940 federal census for ED 4-4, Archuleta Co., CO, 16 Apr 1940, p. 3A [1959]

I have been unable to locate census records for Charles in most years. Oral family history indicates that the family may have intentionally avoided participating in the census for several generations. [1817]
