After his wife left him shortly after Gladys was born, he raised the children himself with help from some relatives. After marrying Emma in 1913, he lived in Bismark, ND, Napoleon, ND, and then Hazelton, ND where he became a real estate agent for I. P. Baker. Shortly after William Jr. was born, the family moved to Ree, ND, where William was a manager of the Expansion Lumber & Mercantile Co. He also ran the post office, and tended the weather bureau. William decided to try his hand at farming, and after visiting his brother, Ed, in Perkings Co., he moved with his family to Cole, SD. There, he bought a thousand-acre farm for $1.25/acre. They built a sod home there, and later constructed a barn/granary. The family lived in the granery while during the construction of a farmhouse. [2215]
