Eighth Generation (Continued)
Family of Ransom BASFORD (634) & Josephine WOOD
1047. John Wesley BASFORD (Ransom7, Jonathon Sanborn6, Jonathan5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born on 1 Aug 1861 in Sweet Home, MO. [2127] John Wesley died in Maryville, MO, on 28 Feb 1899. [1054], [2128] Notice published 2 Mar 1899, Nodaway Democrat. Buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Nodaway Co., MO. [2129], [293] Death Cause: Pneumonia. [1054], [2127] Occupation: Barber. [2130], [2128] aka: Johnnie. [2130]

It is probable that John is the son of Ransom and Josephine (Wood) Basford. This relationship is reported in the IGI. [37] One source indicates that Sarah Jane Ellis “married Ransome Basford, a widower with one child, John, whom she reared to manhood, keeping a deathbed promise to her husband." [1674] This would seem to confirm that John was the son of Ransom and Josephine. However, it appears that John remained in Missouri and was raised by his grandparents. It also appears that Ransom may have had one or two other children (Etta and possibly Leonard).

The will of Abigail C. Wood mentions “John Bassford son of Josephine Bassford my daughter now deceased ” [1680] This is additional evidence that John would be the son of Ransom and Josephine (Wood) Bassford.

He was living with his grandparents Jonathan S. and Guly Basford at the time of the 1870 census, after his father had died. [1048]
