Seventh Generation (Continued)
Family of Benjamin H. BASFORD (270) & Eliza Ann BURNS
677. Charles Egbert BASFORD (Benjamin H.6, David5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, James2, Jacob1). Born abt 15 Nov 1849 in Ft. Covington, NY. [1815], [1816] age 23 years 2 months 9 days at death. Charles Egbert died in Springfield, MA, on 24 Jan 1873. [1815] Death Cause: Injuries on railroad. [1815] aka: Charles M., Bassford. [1817]

Deed of land from Eliza (Burns) Basford’s brothers (Hiram, Joseph, and George) to Benjamin H. Basford shortly after Eliza’s death indicated that she “died without children.” [1153] However, the 1850 census shows that Benjamin and Eliza Basford had a son Charles E. who was 6 months old. Also, the 1860 census shows a son Charles, age 10, and the 1870 census shows a son Charles, age 20. Was Charles Benjamin’s son from a previous marriage? (This doesn’t make sense since he was only 6 months old at this time--unless perhaps his mother had died in childbirth, and Benjamin had quickly remarried?) Or perhaps Charles died before Eliza did so he was no longer alive? Or perhaps he was adopted?

Oral family history indicated that the Charles G. Basford who married Sarah Lena “Mamie” Williams and had a daughter Mabel Pearl Bassford, b. 27 Jun 1887, Constable, NY was a son of this Charles. [1817] Charles the husband of Sarah was supposedly born in 1865, which would seem to be a little young to be the son of this Charles. Possibly he could have been an illegitimate son, which could explain why the younger Charles is not listed in the 1870 census? Or perhaps the younger Charles is not really the son of this Charles?

He is probably the Charles E. Basford, age 23 years 2 months 9 days, who died 24 Jan 1873 in Springfield, MA. [1815] This Charles had a daughter Agnes E. Basford by a wife Helen Kiley. [413]
