This is the same parcel of land that his brother George had deeded to their mother Henrietta on 1 Mar 1864. Joseph and his wife (Mary McGee) also sold a parcel of this land. Presumably Joseph and Henry each came to possess the land after the death of their father Samuel. [299]

He served in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. I of the 6th VT Vols on 5 Oct 1861 at Essex, VT, where he served as a drummer. He was a resident of Shelburne, VT at the time of his enlistment. He contracted Typhoid fever at Camp Griffith, VA, and was discharged at Columbian College Hospital, Washington D.C. on 3 May 1862 due to disability. [1738] He was formally mustered out at Brattleboro, VT on 28 Oct 1864. [299] After his discharge, he returned to live with his family in Shelburne, VT. He drew a disability pension of $4/month which gradually was increased to $24/month. [1738]

He removed to New York to work in a shipyard, and then later to Iowa. After staying there for one winter, he moved back to Vermont in the spring of 1866. [1111]

He removed to South Dakota with two of his borthers, where they endured the harsh winter of 1880-1881, eating only potatoes for 6 weeks. In the spring, they were joined by two other brothers and their families. The five settled in one locality, which became “Basfordville.” [1111]

On 11 Oct 1880, Frederick and his wife filed an indenture from Spink Co., Dakota Territory, giving his brother Orville Basford of Essex, VT power of attorney. This was for the purpose of selling his “house, shop, and the half acre on the south side of the highway leading from the depot to Shelburne Falls” back in Vermont. [299]

He received Federal Land Grants in Spinks Co., SD on 1 Nov 1884 and 2 Sep 1892. There was also a Frederick G. Basford who received land grants on 14 Jun 1884 and 7 Jun 1887. Could this be him as well? [1120]

Returning home, he collected his family and in 1881, they left Shelbourne, VT on an emigrant train. They settled on property in Spink Co., SD, on property four miles east of the town of Chandon. Death certificate gives age at death 79 years 7 months 4 days which would correspond to 10 Dec 1841, [1747] but this conflicts with family Bible record [1114] and the age given in the various census entries. The death certificate also indicates that he had 7 children, 5 of which were still living. Even if the child who died at birth isn’t counted, I belive there were actually 8 children, 6 of whom were still living. The informant on the death certificate was “W. O. Basford,” who I assume was his son WIlliam Orville Basford.

He entered the University of Vermont in 1871. At the time he was living in Georgia, VT. [570] His biography indicates that he graduated from the University of Vermont in 1876, [1756] but from [570] it is not clear whether he actually graduated or not. [1755] indicates that he graduated from the Vermont University Theological School in 1875.

He was a Methodist Episcopal minister, and served in various curches in Milton (1875-1876), Hyde Park (1876-1879), and Essex, VT (1879-1881). He was owner and editor of the Lamoille County News from 1876-1879. [1756], [570]

“The Lamoille News' was started at Hyde Park April 8, 1877, by O. S. Basford. On August 21, 1878, the names of Armstrong and Lewis appeared on the paper as publishers, with Mr. Basford as editor. On November 20, Mr. Basford retired and, on August 6, 1879, Mr. Armstrong also severed his connection with the publication." [1757]

He removed to South Dakota in 1881 and acquired land, encouraging his brothers to join him. He was given a Methodist Church circuit in the south half of Spink Co., where he helped erect three churches. He was a princpal of the Redfield High School, and a Regent of Dakota University (1885-1887). He was also Postmaster of Redfield, SD from 1889-1894. [1756], [570], [1758]

He received Federal Land Grants in Spinks Co., SD on 10 Jun 1882 and 20 Nov 1884. [1120]

He was involved in an incident in Redfield, SD where the County Commissioners, of which Orville was one, together with 10 other leading citizens were arrested and charged with burglary for breaking into the county vaults on 15 Dec 1884 and stealing public records. [1759], [1760], [1761], [1762] It appears that the charges were mostly political in nature, and the case against him was ultimately dismissed. [1763]

In Mar 1895 he appeared before the Methodist Church board, at which time he “confessed his backsliding in leaving the church for politics, and begged to be reinstated to fellowship tat he might secure his former patoral calling.” [1764]

He moved to Missouri where he pastored the church in Wellsville, Montgomery Co., for four years beginning in 1895. His health required him to return to South Dakota. With his sons Frank and Harry, he formed the Redfield Press (Basford Brothers & Basford in 1884). He was postmaster of Redfield from 1889-1894. He was also the editor of the Dakota Methodist, and was active in the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Board of Commissioners of Spink Co. from 1884 to 1886, and a member of the Board of Regents of Mitchell University in 1887-1889. He became the commissioner of Insurance for South Dakota, and was the Sercretary and manager of the Interstate Surety Company of Redfield, SD until 1915. He then became the President of the Provident Insurance Company of Bismark, ND. [1756], [570]

He was the insurance commissioner for South Dakota on 10 Aug 1911 when he was accused of failing to comply with a law “which requires that insurance settlements be divided impartially among all the legal newspapers of the state that comply with the provisions of the law.” [1765] It is not clear what the outcome of this accusation was.

He removed to Bismark, ND an was one of the incorporators of the Provident Insurance Company. [1766] He was elected as president on 24 Mar 1915. [1767]

He was living with his daughter Caroline Anderson in Redfield, SD at the time of the 1920 census. [1748] He was still living with them at the time of his death. [1755]

His death certificate confirms that his parents were Samuel and Henrietta (Kingsbury) Basford. [1754]
