On 20 Feb 1847 he bought a parcel of land in Constable, NY from his father Henry Bassford for $300. He must not have lived there long, if at all, since he is found in New York City the next year. [514]

He is probably the Eli Bassford, age 25, b. Canada, living with his sister Elizabeth’s family in the 1850 census of New York City, 8th Ward. [320]

He is listed in New York City directories during the following years: [19]

The birthdate given for Hiel in the 1900 census is inconsistent with that given in his baptismal record. [962] IHiel and Mary had not been married for 16 years as the census record suggests. Presumably, Irwin and Maude Corwin were Mary’s children from a previous marriage. Their ages would suggest that Mary must have still been married to another husband as recently as 1889.

Hiel died at his home at 294 Hemlock St., New York, NY. [963] His age at death would appear to be off by a year, unless his baptismal record was wrong, or read incorrectly.

There is a Nellie Bassford, daughter of “Neil” and Emma D. Bassford, b. Jan 1876, d. 30 Jul 1876, buried in the Manning Avenue Cemetery, Butler, Morris Co., NJ. [293] She might be a daughter of Hiel and Harriet “Emma” Bassford.

[19], [962], [970], [599], [960], [514], [961], [969], [963], [518], [683], [964], [971], [968], [967], [733]

He first married Nancy Mary TAYLOR on 6 Aug 1851 in New York City, NY. [972] 18th Street Church. Born abt 1829 in New Jersey. [733] age 26 in 1855 census. Nancy Mary died ? . aka: Mary N. [733]

[972], [733]

They had the following children:
587i.
Mary A. (~1852-?)
588ii.
Miriam Augustus (~1853-?)
589iii.
William Ernest (~1855-?)
590iv.
Francis (?) (~1858-?)
591v.
Grace D. (~1861-?)

The marriage record for Grace D. Bassford to Richard Moore in Jan 1896 gives her parents names as Hiel and Mary (Taylor) Bassford. It also gives her age as 24, and indicates that she was living at 95 Hart St., Brooklyn, NY. [973] (Hiel was living at this same address in 1890. [969]) Her age would correspond to a birthdate of abt 1872. However, Hiel had already married his second wife Harriet Brinkerhoff in 1866, so either her age or her mother’s name must be in error. This Grace is probably the child Grace Bassford, age 9, living with the family of Hiel’s sister, Elizabeth (Bassford) Hooker in the 1870 census. [599] If so, this would place her date of birth at abt 1861 rather than 1872, which would be consistent with Nancy being the mother. There are two other Bassford children living in the Hooker household at the time of the 1870 census: Francis, age 12, age Henry, age 18. [599] Probably at least Francis is another child of Hiel and Nancy since he is listed sequentially with Grace.

He second married Harriet Leah Laura Emma BRINKERHOFF, daughter of Christian BRINKERHOFF (1807-1899) & Maria REUTAN (1807-?), on 27 Mar 1866 in North Brunswick, NJ. [970] Born abt 2 Apr 1843 in New Jersey. [974], [975] age 51 years 7 months 3 days at death. Harriet Leah Laura Emma died in Brooklyn, NY, on 5 Nov 1894. [975], [976] Buried on 8 Nov 1894 in Cypress Hills Cemtery, Booklyn, NY. [975] aka: Emma. [970]

She died at her home at 95 Hart St., Brooklyn, NY. Her death record indicates that she had been a resident of New York City for 6 years. [975]

Cemetery records give her death date as 6 Nov 1894. [19]

[19] gave birthdate as 3 May 1843.

[19], [970], [599], [975], [683], [977], [976]

There is an “Irwin Bassford” listed in the 1890 New York City directory. He was a barber living at 60 Van Dam St. with Eliza (Young) Bassford and her father James Young. [969] (Eliza was the widow of Erwin’s brother Reuben.) The directory entry could correspond to this Erwin, or perhaps to Reuben’s son Erwin? The fact that he was listed as a barber would argue for this Erwin, but the fact that this Erwin is found in the 1880 and 1900 Malone, NY censuses would argue for the other Erwin.
