At the time of her marriage to Summer Basford, her name was given as Mary T. Washburn. [37] However, I assume that her maiden name was Smith, and that Washburn was the name of a first husband, since her mother’s name is given as Abigail Smith in the 1880 census. [611] The Will of Abigail Smith of Bangor, ME, dated 8 mar 1879, also confirms that Mary T. Basford was her daughter. [668]

She would probably be the Mary Smith who married Stillman Washburn on 11 Aug 1850, Penobscot Co., ME. [37]

110. Henry T. BASFORD (Joseph5, John4, Jacob3, James2, Jacob1). Born in 1826 in Dixmont, ME. [368] Henry T. died in Kings Co., NY, on 22 Oct 1897. [680] age 72. Buried in Commack Cemetery, Commack, NY. [293] aka: Henry F., Henry L., Bassford.

He might be the Henry Basford who was baptized as an adult on 11 Dec 1832 at the Congregational Church in Chester, NH? [2]

He was living at 6 Ashland Plance in New York City at the time of his marriage in 1864. [681]

Is is probably the Henry T. Bassford who was convicted for his role in the “Lewis Will Conspiracy.” This case inolved A woman and her accomplices who forged a will in an attempt to embezzle money from the estate of a rich man who had died without heirs and left his property to the U.S. government. Henry was sentanced to one year of hard labor and a $1000 fine. [682]

He would probably be the H. T. Basford listed in the 1880 federal census for Jersey City (Precinct 4, District 5), Hudson Co., NJ, p. 503C [683]
H. T. Basford, male, age 54, b. ME, father b. ME, mother b. ME, solicitor

This would probably be the same Henry G. Bussford, age 53, b. ME, who was a prisoner at the New Jersey State Prison at the time of the 1880 census (Trenton, 3rd Ward, Mercer, NJ, p. 75). [683]

Henry T. Bassford, age 78, of Brooklyn, NY, was arrested for counterfeiting on 21 Oct 1896. He and his wife Eleanor kept a boardig house at 521 Second St. He had been in the watch/clock business from 1881, until a few months before his arrest. He was convicted of counterfeiting quarters and half dollars, and selling the coins to trolley car conductors in Brooklyn and Jersey City. He was sentenced to 2 years in the Kings County Penitentiary. Accomplices Edward Tompkins and Thomas S. Fagin were also convicted. [684], [685], [686], [687], [688], [689]

Newspaper accounts of his trial mention a married daughter. [686] Presumably this would be his daughter Maud.

He died in the Kings County Penitentary. [680]

[241], [2], [368], [343], [365], [684], [685], [686], [687], [688], [690], [680], [682], [689], [691], [681], [293]

He married Eleanor LEVENBERG on 30 May 1864 in New York City, NY. [681] Born abt 1842 in New York. [683] age 38 in 1880 census. Eleanor died ? . aka: Lena, Lewenberg. [683], [691]

While her husband was in prison for counterfeiting, she was arrested and charged with perjury on 7 Jun 1897 in connection to a note said to have been made by her in Aug 1889, for $2000. “This note was held by [Charles] Meyer of Jersey City, and when it fell due at the Second National Bank of Jersey City it was protested and Meyer sued for the amount of the note, together with other sums that Meyer claimed Mrs Basford owed him. In her answer to the suit, Mrs. Basford said that she made a note about three years ago and left the date and amount blank, because it was drawn up on Sunday, the understanding that Meyer, who took it, being he wuold fill in the date and amount next day. She claims that the amount was to be $200. She alleged, however, that Meyer antedated the note to August 10, 1889, and made the amount $2,000, and she therefore refused to pay it. It was upon this statement that Meyer charges perjury.” The newspaper article said that she was about 45 years of age at the time of her arrest, but this would be inconsistent with the age given in the 1880 census. (Unless Lena is a different wife than Eleanor.) [690]
