He was apparently a child of his mother’s first marriage since his name was given as George W. Riley in the 1880 census,11 Riley being the surname of his mother’s first husband. However, most records give the name of his father as George Basford.8

He graduated from High School in Mt. Vernon, IL. He served an apprencticeship as a machinist. He removed to Edwardsville, IL in 1893. He worked for a while for the Edwardsville Milling company before returning to his trade as a machinist. In 1907, he purchased the Palace laundry in Collinsville, OH. A year later, he sold this business and returned to Edwardsville where he owned the Excelsior Laundry. He was described as one of “Edwardsville’s leading business men and residents.”27

He died at the Mather’s Nursing Home on Virdon St., Alton, where he had been a patient for several weeks before his death.19,20
